Jason

Born and raised in Thunder Bay, like many Jason moved away for 13 years of his life to a number of cities across Canada. He decided to return to the area to contribute to the community, as well as to embrace the natural wonders, fresh air, and clean water (the cost of living also helped the decision). “Our community is vibrant, welcoming and friendly. Being able to contribute to building our community’s inclusion of Queer and Trans people is what makes us believe we can do better. We can create a reinvented community full of diversity and an inclusive place for Indigenous people, Queer and Trans, BIPOC, racialized people.”

Jason is outgoing and very social. In his own words, “many who know me know I can’t keep my mouth shut.” That trait is helpful when it come to the multitude of causes he supports and fights for. For entertainment, he loves to curl and watch hockey (Calgary Flames for those who want to know and cheer/boo his support), and indulge in live music, theatre, and of course musical theatre (the apex of that love comes when seeing his favourite Lady Gaga 16 times in concert.)

Jason’s favourite spot in the area is steeped in over 125 years of familial history - Rossport, where his family has owned a camp throughout the generations. “It is my little slice of heaven and as I grow older I have learned to appreciate it more.”

The item(s) he couldn’t live without would be his scarf collection, the bigger the better in the winter!

The last year has taught Jason how slow down and enjoy the quiet time. He has been able to reflect on his past and grow from what he has learned about himself through those experiences. Balance is key moving forward.

Jason is actively involved in the community, being a cofounder of the Rainbow Collective of Thunder Bay, a Gender and Sexual Diversity organization to support broader education, advocacy and community development for the GSD communities in Thunder Bay. He is also the Former Chair of Thunder Pride Association as well as current chair the City of Thunder Bay Anti-Racism & respect advisory committee. His love of curling has him volunteering with the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

“My community involvement has spanned 30 years as my grandfather instilled in me that a life of service was important and that giving back was important to build character and life lessons.”
